WOOLWORTH对环境方面的承诺
Woolworths will no longer be automatically offering plastic checkout bags to purchases of three items or less. However if you do require a plastic checkout bag, please ask and we will be more that happy to give you one.
You can also help by bringing back your alternative bag when you do you your shopping. With your help we can achieve the target and help create a better environment.
We are continually investigating new techniques and processes to further improve our level of environmental care and responsibility. Initiatives we have taken in this area include:
Providing plastic bag alternatives
In October 2003, as part of an agreement with State and Federal Governments to comply with the Australian Retailers' Code of Practice, Woolworths set a target to help our shoppers reduce plastic bag usage. To achieve this, we have:
Produced the "Green Bag" as a plastic alternative - 5 million of which were sold throughout Australia by the end of 2004.
Provided training for over 30,000 of our service staff on how to "Fill the Bag not the Environment".
Plastic and Cardboard Recycling
To further reduce waste, we also provide plastic bag recycling bins at the front of all our stores. The plastic is recycled to make other products - rather than being sent to landfill. When we receive stock packaged in cardboard, we compact it and send it to recycling plants across the country to ensure there's no unnecessary waste.
Green Waste
Rather than sending green waste to landfill, we send as much as possible to local farms and nurseries to use as animal feed or fertiliser. We are also working with Agribusiness Advisory Research to develop a program to ensure the safe and environmentally sustainable recycling of fruit and vegetable waste.
Spill kits
To minimise water wastage, we clean all in-store spills with a dry absorbent fibre (which is like sand) rather than using water. This not only saves precious water resources - but also helps us divert waste away from our waterways.
